Are you finding it hard to stick to your exercise routine with all the demands of the holiday season?
I get it, it takes time to exercise. And during the holiday season, you’re too busy to even make time for what we WANT to do, let alone find time to create or stick to new, healthy habits. No argument here!
It’s not exactly relaxing to start an exercise routine when you’re already exhausted from work, and long to-do lists. Unless you’re doing some YIN yoga that is. Thankfully, there are ways to fit exercise into your day without having to block out a huge amount of time.
Here are five super simple ways to fit movement and exercise into your busy schedule this holiday season. Even if you’re short on time
1. Rethink your seating.
At your workplace, do you sit in a normal office chair? If so, consider shifting to a standing desk, which exercises your leg muscles much more actively than you would while sitting passively. Even sitting on an exercise ball forces your core muscles to activate, helping your body exercise to keep itself stable. It may not seem like much, but those efforts stack up to greater muscular strength over time.
2. Get up and walk around.
If you’re sitting down all day at work, make it a point to get up and move around often. A good idea is to set a timer on your cell phone for every 50 minutes to an hour. When the alarm goes off, get and walk around. Maybe go to the bathroom, get a drink of water, stretch a little bit. You can also use this as an opportunity to reset so you can return to your work feeling refreshed and little more energized.
3. Go for a quickie
A quick run or walk around the neighborhood that is. Even just going for a 5-minute jog or walking one lap around your house or apartment building, something is better than nothing. You’ll be surprised how that 5-minute run can turn into 10 and a walk around the house turn into a walk down the block. If you have the time and can keep going great! If not, keep it quick.
4. You and YouTube
Despite popular belief you don’t have to go to the gym to get a good workout in. In fact, you can get just as good a workout without having to step foot out of your house. Yup it’s true- thanks to YouTube. All you need is yourself, maybe a mat depending on what you’re doing and your phone, laptop, or tablet. You can easily search for 5, 10, 15-minute workouts of any variety you choose. Whether it’s a 5-minute ab workout or a 10-minute beginners yoga flow, the choice is yours. Just be sure to choose something that you’ll enjoy.
5. Park as far as you can.
Shooting to get in as many steps as possible during the day is a seamless way to move more. If you don’t mind the cold, doing this at each stop will easily double or triple your steps for the day. Even if you can’t stand the cold you can make it a short run every time you stop J. Don’t underestimate the power of compounding. You’d be surprised how these seemingly insignificant efforts add up over the course of the day, week, and month. This alone can make be the difference between gaining 3 extra pounds or maintaining your weight.
